Twenty Six

It’s 32°F this morning. I have my longest, coziest leg warmers on and pointy red laced shoes. I’m 26 now and had a remarkably good, low-key birthday yesterday. A wonderful vegan dinner was prepared for me by a delightful vegetarian gentleman. The recent return of vegetarian fare is very in-step with the something-new-something-old theme my life has taken on this year and it very much “worked” on my birthday. Balance . I left with a fistful of loaner Bowie albums I don’t have in my own library and ate homemade cashew-butter cups. Decided that 25 was a good trip.

As for birthday weekend, Nick Cave was incredible. The set included “Tupelo,” “Love Letter,” “The Lyre of Orpheus,” “Stagger Lee,” “Dig Lazarus Dig,” “Midnight Man,” “Red Right Hand,” “God Is in the House,” “The Weeping Song,” “Papa Won’t Leave You Henry,”—it was absolutely amazing. With a little bit more coffee, I could recount the entire setlist but alas, I’ve only just started into my AM joe. I will tell you this, though: I was at times literally sitting on the edge of my seat.

Hopefully I continue to sit on the edge of my seat for the rest of this year.

Speaking of cake, I baked this one for my dear friend Meredith’s 26th birthday. From top to bottom: unsweetened whipped cream, chocolate mousse (2/3 semisweet, 1/3 bittersweet) and almost-flourless chocolate cake. Nom nom nom!

Cake.

Forget about frosting, music is the cake. And as far as cake goes, this month has been a pretty good mix of flour, butter, sugar and eggs. Not only did I finally get my paws on three albums on my most-wanted list (Gash by Foetus, Strategies Against Architecture II and Prick’s self-titled mid-90s effort which I listened to uh, four or five times today) but I also birthday gifted myself a ticket to see Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds in New York this Saturday and I also got a ticket to see Nine Inch Nails in Montréal in November. I figure it’s time I see them live.

And I’ve been trading like crazy so I’ve got tons of long lost friends back. I might never have to leave my house again! One can only hope…
